Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) March 21, 2014

Partnership to strengthen collaborations in engineering breakthroughs and its societal impacts

Stevens Institute of Technology opens its doors to the IEEE History Center, the historical arm of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. After 24 years, the History Center has relocated from Rutgers University to the Stevens campus in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The move will help both parties take advantage of educational and strategic opportunities for furthering engineering education at all levels.

The IEEE History Centers goal is to promote broader awareness and appreciation of engineering and its societal impact through exploring and making known its history. This mission seemed a perfect fit with Stevens 144 years of research and education in technological innovation, said Michael N. Geselowitz, Ph.D., Senior Director of the Center.

Stevens is proud to welcome the IEEE History Center to our campus. We are looking forward to the collaboration between Stevens and IEEE to help produce future generations of engineers while retaining a tie to the past, said George Korfiatis, Stevens Provost and University Vice President.

The IEEE History Center will be affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at Stevens, the academic unit dedicated to teaching and research at the intersection of science, technology, the humanities, and the arts. The twofold mission of the College makes it a perfect fit for the IEEE History Center. Consistent with the long-standing tradition of Stevens to provide a broad-based education, CAL continues to provide engineers and technologists with a solid foundation in the humanities and social sciences, enabling them to become articulate, creative, and ethically responsible. In addition, through its many majors and programs, CAL seeks to educate humanists and artists to be knowledgeable in the history of advances in science and technology, so they may become leaders in the fields that encompass them. The Center will be located in the S. C. Williams Library.

We are delighted to welcome the IEEE History Center to Stevens. Having them on campus and part of the community will allow us to further our goal of promoting an awareness of the importance of understanding the past so that we can not only become more responsible in the present, but explore what is possible in the future. This is especially the case when it comes to science and technology, where such knowledge is just as critical for those who use it as those who will be at the forefront of creating it, declared Lisa M. Dolling, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters at Stevens.

The Stevens community benefits from new courses, exhibits, and activities taught and led by the History Centers six staff members making the move to campus.
